EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.
